And ISO 14001 is the international specification for an (EMS). It specifies requirements for establishing an environmental policy, determining environmental aspects and impacts of products/activities/services, planning environmental objectives and measurable targets, implementation and operation of programs to meet objectives and targets, checking and corrective action, and management review. Thus it can be seen that ISO14001 is foundation of ISO14000. It is generic and flexible enough to apply to any organization producing and/or manufacturing any product, or even providing a service anywhere in the world. If we see ISO 14000 as a University, then ISO 14001 can be compared as Kindergarten. Owning ISO14001 doesn’t equal having ISO 14000.The Company who receives ISO14001 doesn’t mean that its products can be sold unobstructed; it just shows that the enterprise is setting up a environment management system.
Target of the standards
ISO 14001 puts the main emphasis on a consitent improvement, it is used as a method to reach target of a enterprise meanwhile pay attention to the environment performance of the company , this continued Improvementprocess based on a method named“Plan-Do-Check-Optimize“.
Plan: to declare the target and process, inoder to realize the environmentpolitic of an organisation.
Do: Realization of the process
Check: to watch the process during it been taking through, considering the rest and other requirements and targets of the organization’s environmentpolitic; if neccessary publish the environment performance, the achieve ment of the organisation which relate to environment protection.
Optimize : If neccessary the processes should be adjusted and corrected.
In oder to reach this, the enterprise should set up a operational environment policy , target, programm as well as built a adequite management system, which would be helpful in the target-realization process.
In the standards, there’s no absolute requirements towards the environment performance. However an adherence of the commitment is request, which the organization have posed in its own enironment policy.
Development of ISO14001
ISO 14001 was first published in 1996 and specifies the actual requirements for an environmental management system. It applies to those environmental aspects which the organization has control and over which it can be expected to have an influence.
ISO 14001 is often seen as the corner stone standard of the ISO 14000 series. However, it is not only the most well known, but is the only ISO 14000 standard against which it is currently possible to be certified by an external certification authority. Having stated this, it does not itself state specific environmental performance criteria.
This standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to:
• implement, maintain and improve an environmental management system
• assure itself of its conformance with its own stated environmental policy (those policy commitments of course must be made)
• demonstrate conformance
• ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations
• seek certification of its environmental management system by an external third party organization
• make a self-determination of conformance
